Knowing which foundation is under your home tells you how it will move, how it will fail, and what a repair will involve. Here is how to tell them apart in 30 seconds, and what each one means for you.
Walk to the outside edge of your home. See small vents or a crawl-space door near the base, and do your floors feel slightly bouncy? That is pier and beam. Does the house sit low to the ground with a solid concrete edge and floors that do not flex at all? That is a slab. Built after ~1965 in Texas? Almost certainly a slab.
A slab foundation is exactly what it sounds like: a single, thick pad of reinforced concrete poured directly on the prepared ground, with the house built on top. It became the Texas standard in the 1960s because it is fast and inexpensive to build. Today the large majority of Texas homes sit on slabs.
Most modern Texas slabs are post-tension, meaning steel cables are tensioned inside the concrete to help it resist the cracking forces of expansive clay. Older slabs are conventionally reinforced with rebar.
How slabs fail: when the expansive clay beneath swells and shrinks unevenly, the rigid slab cannot flex with it. The perimeter drops during drought (edge settlement) or the center lifts after heavy rain (heave), and the concrete cracks. You see it as diagonal cracks above doors and windows, sticking doors, and sloping floors.

A pier-and-beam (also called "pier and joist" or a raised foundation) lifts the house off the ground on a grid of piers, with wooden beams and joists spanning between them and a crawl space underneath. It was the norm in Texas before the 1960s and is still used for custom homes, sloping lots, and flood-prone areas.
How pier and beam fails: the individual piers settle or shift as the soil moves, wooden beams sag or rot from crawl-space moisture, and the floor system loses its level. You feel it as bouncy or sloping floors, gaps at the baseboards, and doors that drag.
How pier and beam is repaired: because the components are individually accessible, repairs can be targeted — re-shimming or replacing failing piers, sistering or replacing rotted beams, and adding a vapor barrier to control crawl-space moisture. Isolated fixes are often less invasive than slab work.

If the home sits low to the ground with no crawl space, concrete visible at the base, and solid floors that do not flex, it is almost certainly a slab. Homes built in Texas after about 1965 are predominantly slab; older and historic homes are more often pier and beam.
Neither is universally better. Pier and beam is easier and often cheaper to access and repair, keeps plumbing reachable, and flexes with the soil, but the wood components can rot and it costs more to build. Slab is cheaper to build, has no crawl space to maintain, and sits solidly, but repairs are more invasive and under-slab plumbing leaks are hard to reach. In Texas expansive clay, both types move; what matters most is drainage and soil moisture management, not which foundation you have.
Slab-on-grade is by far the most common foundation for Texas homes built since the 1960s, because it is faster and cheaper to pour. Pier-and-beam foundations dominate in older and historic neighborhoods (pre-1960s) and are still chosen for some custom homes, hillside lots, and flood-prone areas where elevating the structure is an advantage.
It depends on the scope, not just the type. Slab repair usually means driving piers around (and sometimes under) the perimeter to lift and stabilize the concrete. Pier-and-beam repair can range from inexpensive shimming and re-leveling to more involved beam replacement and new piers. Isolated pier-and-beam fixes are often cheaper; a full re-level of either type is a larger job. Get an inspection for an accurate, itemized quote for your specific home.
It is technically possible but rarely worth it. Converting requires lifting the house, removing the existing foundation, and pouring a new slab, which is far more expensive than simply repairing the pier-and-beam system. Repairing or reinforcing the existing foundation is almost always the better value.
